Godaido Temple

Godaido is a small temple hall located on an islet near the pier and is the oldest remaining Momoyama-style structure in the Tohoku region. Reconstructed in 1604 by Date Masamune, it houses statues of the Five Great Wisdom Kings that are displayed to the public once every 33 years, with the next display scheduled for 2039. Please see below for information in English.

    Nearest Station/Bus Stop: JR Matsushima Kaigan Station
    Approximate travel time from the station: 10-minute walk from Matsushima Kaigan Station on the JR Senseki Line. Located just next to the Matsushima pier.
    Barrier-free Information
    ・To reach Godaido Temple, you need to cross bridges known as "Sukashi Bridges." These bridges have many gaps and cannot be accessed with a wheelchair.
    ・Before crossing the bridges, there are narrow stone steps.
    ・The best spot for viewing Godaido Temple is along the embankment next to the pier.
    ・
    From January 9 to April 10, 2024, and from January 14 to March 31, 2025 (tentative), Godaido Temple will be closed to visitors due to repair work on the bridges. However, it is possible to view Godaido from the central plaza at Matsushima Kaigan.
