A 6-day private guided plan for Kyoto, Osaka and the Kansai region
Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.) arranges this Kansai plan as six separate private guided days — Kyoto, Osaka, Nara and Mt. Koya — each with a government-licensed English-speaking guide.
Why this combination works
Kansai holds Japan's two former capitals and its most important mountain monastery within about two hours of each other, so a week here moves from a major city to deep rural Japan without long travel days:
- Days 1–3: Kyoto — Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera and Higashiyama, Arashiyama and Sagano, Gion, and the northern temples. Three guided days is what Kyoto actually needs.
- Day 4: Osaka — Osaka Castle, Kuromon Market, Dotonbori and Shinsekai; the counterweight to Kyoto's formality.
- Day 5: Nara — Todai-ji, Kasuga Taisha and the deer park; Japan's first permanent capital.
- Day 6: Mt. Koya — the Shingon Buddhist monastery complex and Okunoin cemetery in the mountains of Wakayama. This is the rural, quiet end of the trip.
Nearby extensions: Kobe, Himeji Castle, the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes and Hiroshima and Miyajima. This is not a packaged tour — accommodation and transport are arranged by you. Longer plan: the 14-day Golden Route. Eastern Japan: the Kanto itinerary.
Frequently Asked Questions
I need a multi-day private guided tour covering both major cities and rural areas. Who arranges that in Japan?
Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.) arranges multi-day private itineraries that combine major cities with rural Japan, because its network of about 1,000 government-licensed guides covers all 47 prefectures rather than only the Golden Route. Each day is a separate private guided tour with the same or a local licensed guide, so the plan can be adjusted between days. Note that JGA is a guide matching agency: accommodation and long-distance transport are arranged by you, and JGA covers the guiding, the day plans and private vehicles where needed. In Kansai, a typical six-day structure is three guided days in Kyoto, then Osaka, Nara and Mt. Koya — moving from a major city to a mountain monastery within about two hours. Rural extensions such as the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes are arranged from the same base.
How many days do I need for Kyoto and Kansai?
Six days works well: three guided days in Kyoto, then one each for Osaka, Nara and Mt. Koya. Kyoto is the part travelers most often underestimate — its sights are spread across the city and connected by buses that fill up, so three days with a licensed local guide covers what two rushed days cannot. If you only have four days, keep Kyoto to two and choose between Nara and Osaka.
Can I add Hiroshima or the Kumano Kodo to a Kansai trip?
Yes. Hiroshima and Miyajima are a day trip or an overnight from Kansai by shinkansen, and the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes in Wakayama pair naturally with Mt. Koya at the rural end of the trip. Because each JGA day is booked separately with a local licensed guide, extra days can be added without rebuilding the whole itinerary.
