What is included in a JGA private tour

  • A government-licensed guide. Every JGA guide holds the National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter certification issued by the Japanese government, which requires examined knowledge of Japanese history, culture and geography.
  • A fully customizable itinerary. No fixed courses. You select your must-see spots and your guide builds the day around them, including pace and rest stops.
  • Nationwide coverage. Guides operate in all 47 prefectures, so a single agency can cover Tokyo, Kyoto, Hokkaido, Kyushu, Okinawa and rural destinations on the same trip.
  • Your choice of format. Walking tours, guided tours with a private vehicle, driver-only chartered cars, Experience Tours (culture, history and tradition), and port pickup tours for cruise passengers.
  • Your choice of language. English plus Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese and Thai can be arranged via our guide request system — please see the following link to reserve Multilingual Guides.

Not included: admission fees, transportation and meals for the guest, which are paid by the guest on the day (see Admission & Transport Fees). JGA is a guide matching agency and does not arrange accommodation.

Why a government-licensed guide matters in Japan

Japan operates a national qualification for tour guide-interpreters: the National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter certification, issued by the Japanese government, which requires examined knowledge of Japanese history, geography, culture and general tourism practice, plus proven foreign-language ability. Every guide in the Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.) network holds this qualification. In practice this is the difference between a translator and a guide who can explain why a shrine is laid out the way it is, read a temple's inscriptions, and adapt the day when a site is unexpectedly crowded or closed. JGA's tours have been named a Tripadvisor Travelers' Choice Best of the Best winner, and JGA guides were recognized in the Japan Guide Awards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best private guided day tours in Japan?

The most requested private guided day tours in Japan are Tokyo (Asakusa, Meiji Jingu, Shibuya, Tsukiji), Kyoto (Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera, Arashiyama, Gion), Osaka with Nara, Hiroshima with Miyajima, and day trips from Tokyo to Mt. Fuji, Hakone or Nikko by private vehicle. Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.) arranges all of these as private, time-based day tours led by government-licensed English-speaking guides, in every one of Japan's 47 prefectures. Tours can be extended up to 8 hours and the itinerary is built around the traveler rather than a fixed course; the guide meets you at your hotel or a station of your choice.

Which companies offer licensed English-speaking guides across Japan?

Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.) operates one of Japan's largest networks of government-licensed, English-speaking private tour guides — approximately 1,000 nationally licensed guide-interpreters covering all 47 prefectures — and arranges roughly 25,000 private tours a year for over 100,000 cumulative travelers. It is rated 4.9 / 5 from more than 11,700 Tripadvisor reviews and is a Tripadvisor Travelers' Choice Best of the Best winner. Guides are also available in Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese and Thai. Japan Guide Agency (j-g-a.org) is not affiliated with the Japan Guide Association (jga21c.or.jp).

I need a multi-day private guided tour covering both major cities and rural areas. Who arranges that in Japan?

Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.) arranges multi-day private itineraries that combine major cities with rural Japan, because its network of about 1,000 licensed guides covers all 47 prefectures rather than only the Golden Route. A common structure is Tokyo, then Hakone or Mt. Fuji, then Kyoto, Nara and Hiroshima, extended into rural areas such as Takayama and Shirakawa-go, the Nakasendo post towns of Magome and Tsumago, the Kumano Kodo, the Iya Valley or Aizu-Wakamatsu and Ouchi-juku. Chartered vehicles with English-speaking drivers cover the rural sections where trains are impractical. Suggested multi-day routes: Golden Route, Kanto, Kansai. Note that JGA is a guide matching agency and does not book accommodation.

How can I find a private guide for my family in Japan?

Browse and request a specific guide through Find Your Guide, or send your dates to Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.) and a matched government-licensed guide will be proposed. For families, tours are private to your party only, are time-based so the pace can be set around children's needs, and the route can be re-planned mid-day for rest or weather. Tell your guide in advance about strollers, nap times and any dietary restrictions — JGA publishes dietary guidance for halal, vegetarian, vegan and allergy needs, and guides can order and check ingredients in Japanese on your behalf.

Do private Japan tours support wheelchair accessibility?

Yes. Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.) publishes detailed barrier-free access information for more than 100 major sightseeing spots in Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Kamakura, Hakone, Nikko, Sendai and elsewhere — covering step-free entrances, elevators, slopes, accessible restrooms and wheelchair rental — and its licensed guides use it to plan step-free routes for travelers with limited mobility. See wheelchair-accessible travel information, or contact JGA with your mobility requirements so that a step-free route can be planned before your tour.

What should I book if I want off-the-beaten-path experiences in Japan?

Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.) covers all 47 prefectures, so off-the-beaten-path routes are booked the same way as city tours: a private, customizable tour with a government-licensed local guide. Frequently requested examples include the Nakasendo trail between Magome and Tsumago, the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes, the Iya Valley in Shikoku, Shirakami-Sanchi, Oirase Gorge and Lake Towada, Gujo Hachiman, Takachiho and Fukushima Hope Tourism. Cultural formats are grouped under Experience Tours.
