Toshogu Shrine is a majestic and splendid wooden shrine designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While it is a must see for many, special care must be taken for those with physical disabilities as it is not completely barrier-free. The approach to the shrine is made up of a series of gently sloping gravel surfaces and cobblestone pavements but there are a number of steps blocking the way, creating a major barrier for wheelchair users. There are alternative barrier-free routes that need security guards to accompany you, however the the steps at Yomeimon Gate, the main entrance to Toshogu, are the only way to see directly under the gate.
